Interview with Cellist Nick Reeves

In anticipation for the “Exploring Lyricism” Residency, cellist Nick Reeves shares the process of interpreting newly-composed works of music.

Nick Reeves, Cello

What are the greatest challenges of interpreting a piece when it hasn't been played before?

The greatest challenge for me is figuring out a way to shape my tone without any reference.

What are a few of the differences between interpreting a piece by a living composer versus playing a piece of solo Bach?

When interpreting a new piece of music, I feel more of a connection and obligation to the composer as a person. With Bach, I feel more selfish. I feel like I’m using the music for my own benefit.

What are your goals for the Musaics Residency Program?

I want to strengthen my knowledge of how to prepare and present a program of new music. I’m looking forward to learning through listening to the other participants in the Residency.
