#18 — Some Mornings Need Lullabies
COMPOSED BY AILEEN CHAO & PREMIERED BY CELLIST NICK REEVES, INSPIRED BY JUNE YOKELL’S PAINTING, “NOW WHAT?”
“‘Now What?’ Is a painting based on a photograph that I took while looking out into my backyard. I live in the SF Bay Area and frequently there is a layer of fog that descends upon the landscape. It just so happened that we had left out a chair which was now empty. That vision of the empty chair looking into the void brought up my own sense of loss and loneliness, feelings I most often kept hidden. Along with my personal feelings, I’d also been paying attention to how I was experiencing what was happening to our country and feeling a real sense of sadness as to the direction it was taking. The image of the chair looking out into the fog became a metaphor for the physical place, the feelings that I carry with me and how I was experiencing the loss in my country. The title arose after the completion of the painting.”
