#24 — Metaxis II

COMPOSED BY ROBERTO GRANADOS & PREMIERED BY CLASSICAL GUITARISTS ROBERTO GRANADOS AND SATCHEL HENNEMAN, INSPIRED BY DARRIL TIGHE’S PAINTING, “EQUANIMITY”

“Equanimity is one of 4 new paintings I did. It was the first of the four. I painted it and stared at it for a month trying to decide if it was finished. I decided it was. Unusual for me in that I left a lot of white space. The name Equanimity came to me through my studies of Buddhist philosophy and meditation. It equals balance. Used some old techniques and some new ones. It was an exploration of my state of mind when I am calm. When I paint I move away from my ego and let the universe lead me. Painting is a spiritual experience. I am a vessel and I contract with the paper the watercolors the brushes and move aside.

The Buddhist definition of Equanimity is "one of the four sublime attitudes and is considered neither a thought nor an emotion.  It is rather the steady conscious realization of reality's transience.  It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love.  Love this definition. I contemplated this painting a lot and felt moved to feel love and balance, and also simplicity. The red squares balance the gestures and the white paper reflects the light. The painting has been in several shows. I want to achieve for myself the love, compassion and calmness the painting reflects.”
