#26 — Bagatelle

COMPOSED BY JED DISTLER & PREMIERED BY PIANIST REED TETZLOFF, INSPIRED BY KATIE SWATLAND’S “ELEMENTS COLLECTION”

“The pieces in my ‘Elements’ collection look very different from my more realistic and imaginative paintings, but they are actually the beginning stages of how I create such works with more complex and recognizable forms, such as a human figure. It is in the beginning stages of a work where the ‘imprintal’ qualities emerge and guide the painting process. With the pieces in my ‘Elements’ collection, I was after capturing the initial energetic gestures of form. In order to connect more directly with the elemental forms themselves, I developed a technique of painting on copper with fire and light outside immersed in Nature’s elements, whether that be by the ocean or in a snow covered forest surrounded by birch trees.”
