Join renowned pianist Sarah Cahill and Colombian composer Juan Sebastián Cardona Ospina for an evening of music and conversation, as Sarah performs Juan Sebastián’s original work ‘When the Sunrise Lies’, accompanied by a discussion around the vision of the composition and its translation into live performance.

JUAN SEBASTIÁN CARDONA ospina
Juan Sebastián is a Colombian composer who is currently based in Emeryville, California. His musical compositions are inspired by literature, using stories and moods from books as scaffolding, hoping to create a new personal read. Besides composing, Sebastian is a passioned educator of Music Theory and Composition, who looks to awaken love in his friends and students for music, art, coffee and life.
His orchestral and chamber music have been performed, awarded and/or recorded by the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, University EAFIT Symphonic Orchestra, Caldas Symphonic Orchestra, University of Memphis Contemporary Chamber Players and Periscopio Ensemble.
Juan Sebastian obtained his DMA in composition at the University of Memphis, with Kamran Ince, John Baur and Mahir Cetiz. In 2016, Juan Sebastian earned an M.M. in composition from the University EAFIT, where he studied with Victor Agudelo. In 2015, he was given a condecoration for academic merit in the event "Noche de los mejores" by the former President of Colombia and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
He was a Lecturer at Universidad de Caldas until June 2022, when he relocated in Emeryville, CA.
Sarah Cahill
Hailed as “a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” by The New York Times and “a brilliant and charismatic advocate for modern and contemporary composers” by Time Out New York, Sarah Cahill has commissioned and premiered over seventy compositions for solo piano. Composers who have dedicated works to Cahill include John Adams, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Pauline Oliveros, Julia Wolfe, Roscoe Mitchell, Annea Lockwood, and Ingram Marshall.
Keyboard Magazine writes, “Through her inspired interpretation of works across the 20th and 21st centuries, Cahill has been instrumental in bringing to life the music of many of our greatest living composers.” She was named a 2018 Champion of New Music, awarded by the American Composers Forum (ACF).
