#1 — Improvisation on Blue

WITH LAUREN VANDERVELDEN, VIOLINIST AND COMPOSER & DARRIL TIGHE, PAINTER

“I painted Transition to Blue about 4 months ago.  I had been going through stages of exploring different colors. I used yellow as a base to explore and did 6 paintings. Then I moved on to the color orange. I explored the vibrancy and light emanating from that color. I used several different color combinations with the yellow paintings and the orange paintings. The composition was created by offsetting yellow and orange with those color combinations.

One day a friend visited my studio and announced her favorite color was blue. I looked around at the paintings in my studio. No blue. So I challenged myself to create an all blue painting. I started with blue gestures: cobalt blue, Cerulean blue, etc. and added teale and a little bit of gold at the top. I worked for days using gestures of blue paint; layering them on top of each other. At some point I would stop look and observe. I felt the blue colors. I was peaceful and calm as I worked. When it became beautiful I worked more. Blues represent not only peace and calm but the ocean, the sky, the deep blues of the sky as it turned orange with the sunset. I was finished in a week. The painting was rich with blues. Felt like I could fall into it and swim.”
