#22 — Thinking Too Much

COMPOSED BY MARIO GODOY & PREMIERED BY CELLIST ALEXANDER HERSH, INSPIRED BY SHERRY KARVER’S “THINKING TOO MUCH”

“This photo is from my series Movement Interrupted which I began a couple years ago, but now it's taken on a whole new meaning since Covid-19 has literally interrupted all of our movement. In this series I am photographing data corruption glitches that occur on my TV screen when there's uneven reception. The images fragment and disintegrate for a split second on the screen, then disappear. I'm there to capture that moment. These are actual unaltered photos (except for slight cropping). I became fascinated by this imagery because for the last couple of years I have been feeling that everything in our society was crumbling and falling apart - politically, socially, environmentally, etc. These images represented that for me, but I still try and see the beauty within the chaos.

This particular image "Thinking Too Much" reminds me of myself, with all these thoughts and worries swirling around in my head, and I think many of us have been feeling like that too, especially now. For that reason I submitted this image to the symposium, in the hopes that others could relate to it as well. I have this series printed as dye sublimation on metal because the metal substrate shines through the surface, adding another layer of visual depth that doesn't happen with paper. Also the industrial feel of the metal works well with the contemporary digital technology and the data glitches that occur. I've been doing photography for many years, although my background is in ceramics, and I've taught college level ceramics for 30 years. I started doing photography as a way to document my ceramic sculpture, and eventually it morphed into photo-based work.”
