#21 — Reflection
COMPOSED BY SARA BARONE & PREMIERED BY VIOLINIST LUCY NEMETH AND PIANIST AUDREY VARDANEGA, INSPIRED BY DALE CARTER’S PHOTOGRAPH, “ORANGE ON BLUE”
“Orange on Blue was taken at sunset in my hometown of Laguna Beach, California. Inspired by the paintings of Mark Rothko, I keep my eyes out for the play of sky and ocean, and juxtaposed colors atop one another. Such images create a feeling of serenity for me, and hopefully, for the viewer.
As mentioned, Mark Rothko is one of my main artistic inspirations. I remember clearly, seeing his work for the first time at LACMA. I sat on a bench staring at the painting, transfixed, feeling the same calmness that comes over me when I’m in nature, which is my main subject matter. I’m also inspired by the great nature photographer, Elliot Porter, who often flattened the plane of his photographs, a technique which I try to emulate.
I submitted my work on the generous recommendation of Sharona Barzilay, a contributor to Musaics of the Bay. Having viewed the other fine art pieces, and the beautiful accompanying music, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to submit my photograph, Orange on Blue, to the Symposium.”
