#34 — Swimming Series
COMPOSED & PREMIERED BY PIANIST ANDREI ROMANOV, INSPIRED BY ALASTAIR DACEY’S “SWIMMING SERIES”
“This series began with an outing… a picnic with friends. We spent a summer's afternoon on rocks above a deep swimming hole. I did a bunch of sketches over the course of the day, mesmerized by the water’s inflections of light and color and charmed by the scene of a young boy blissfully enjoying the water and rocks. There were cannon balls. Months later I came across the sketches and photos from that day and was taken by the visual richness of the memory. I set out to create one piece to see if I could capture something of the sparkle and glare of the light and the playful gesture of the boy and the surprising color hues and harmonies. One painting led to two and so on until I had a series of dappled sunlit glimpses of that lovely afternoon. As a portrait painter and one academically trained, it was especially fun to paint the ways light, water and reflections do at times distort and fragment shapes and anatomy and challenge your assumptions.
